| Answer By Veronica Ortiz RodriguezPlease give us a short introduction of yourself so the readers know with who to deal with?I am Veronica Ortiz Rodriguez also known as General Kaos. I am the lead extreme vocalist and singer for the Canadian based melodeath sextet: Karkaos.Tell us more about the origin of KARKAOS. Where are the band members coming from? Give me some details about your band Now.Karkaos is a Montreal act.The band was originally formed back in 2006 by our guitarist Vincent Harnois. Most of the members were high school friends of his and well, as I call it: humble beginnings. It all started in his parents' basement and under a different name: Sinister Vengeance.Along with band member changes, maturing sound and goals, the name changed to Karkaos. Our current lineup consists of Vincent Harnois on rhythm guitar, Normand Martel on drums, Sebastien Belanger-Lapierre on keyboards, Francis Tremblay on lead guitar, Eddy Levitsky on bass and myself, as vocals.Tell me about the origin of the band’s name! How serious do you take yourselves actually? It was Vince who came up with the name Karkaos from playing some multiplayer game online. The name was catchy and perhaps intriguing. For us, Karkaos is actually something dark and mythical. A mysterious entity which is part of our daily lives. Music is our passion and our lives. So we do take this band seriously and we give our 100 percent every time. For instance, I might have a day job, but as soon as that ends, I’m on Karkaos mode. All I think and do and breathe is related to music and this applies to most if not all of us. Of course, any project, no matter the dedication and time you put into it, is not business or serious all the time. This is something we love and enjoy, and you can see us having a good time on stage as off-stage.If you had to describe your music in " five " words, which would you choose?Epic, melodic, powerful, energizing and phantasmagoric.Do you play music that tends to the heart of Death Metal and hits the true core? What´s your philosophy? We aren’t specifically death metal and we don’t intend to carry that one sound. We all have different musical backgrounds and influences. So you can imagine the amalgamation of sounds that make Karkaos. The closest elements to Death Metal that we carry would be the guttural extreme vocals and some of the rhythm from our guitar play. Death Metal in its specific genre is very appealing to me and I bring it vocally. But our philosophy is to bring together different types and appeal to a wider mass. It’s uniting different people in one room to enjoy what we offer them. Variety brings them together as it has brought us together. A metal alliance or army! That’s what I would say.Tell me more about the Last Release "In Burning Skies" EP ! Are You Very Satisfied with Progress Music for Now??In Burning Skies was a wonderful period. And I emphasize the past tense as we are constantly learning and evolving as musicians. Of course we are very proud with what we achieved, but our journey doesn’t just stop there. The EP was about exposing and introducing our sound and style to the scene. That’s why we decided to get back into writing and hit the studios this year to showcase our new material. How do you get the inspiration for your writing? How would you describe your style? My writing style is always very sincere, emotional and based on personal experiences. The way I channel these elements through my writing is open and can be interpreted differentlyby our fans and listeners. In our new album, I decided to take on a more epic approach, a story-telling way so that everyone can identify themselves and their struggles or feelings differently and in their own way. How are the tasks of song creating distributed to the band members? Is it all a collective effort or does everyone work at home alone and then in studio you get to join the parts together? How Often Member Band Meets? The instrumental is normally written by our guitarists: Vince and Frank compose and lay out the musical pattern. They will show up at practice and play the song, tell us what they have in mind or the feeling they want to interpret. So we all collectively pitch in. Finally, the vocal arrangement and lyrical content is added by me.This way has always been very successful for us and we also work this way because we trust each other and our abilities. As of late, we also have Eddy, our bassist, assist in the musical composing. We practice twice a week, for several hours and most of the time, we individually practice on our side or meet on occasions to discuss the lyrical or musical direction. When did you start playing and how old were you when you became interested in metal? Did learning music theory help you or slow you down in achieving your musical goals? We have all individually been honing our skills for many years now. I, for a matter, have been doing extreme vocals for the past 10 years but have been singing for over 15 years. Some of us have done musical theory. Eddy for instance, studied music since early high school. What bands have influenced you more than Melodic Death Metal? What music Do you listen at the moment? Do you like The Metalcore, Deathcore and other modern styles?I believe it’s crucial for any metal musician to be open to all types of metal genres including other types of music. How else are you supposed to improve your talent or become a professional? As I mentioned before, the band is comprised of members who have different musical tastes and influences. In joining these different backgrounds, we made our sound. And it’s a reality for many other bands out there. We all listen to different bands and different types of music. I can go as far as saying I listen to pop to electro to jazz to fusion. The same applies for most of my band members: some listen to old school metal, like Helloween or Queensryche. Some of them even power, doom or black metal. Every genre is special and nowadays constantly evolving. And Metalcore and Deathcore or Crabcore are examples of metal growing in other directions. I still respect those types of music because they keep the base element alive: METAL.How big a role for A Woman in Extreme Music? what do you think things like this are become a "Idealism" in self or just want to give the impression of a very "Interesting" only for the listeners? or do you have another about truth Opinions how you feel during this here?To be honest with you, I am indifferent to how women are perceived in our metal scene. From Scream Queens to Opera Divas. I don’t care. Just do and pursue what you love. I am not doing this to be recognized for any form of valor or having “balls” to do this kind of extreme music. It’s my element and I feel comfortable. I love it and embrace it. If people like it and enjoy it, then good! I am happy. I am not here to do some feminist-movement or to prove anything to anyone. I’m here to sing and scream my heart out. Period. Will you always be treated "notch" in the music playing during this than others??***(I’m not sure to what exactly you refer… your question is not well phrased or you haven’t used the right word)If you are referring to being treated differently because I am a woman. Absolutely not. It has a lot to do with how you approach it and your attitude. And clearly seeing I’m not trying to be someone special or some kind of diva, other male vocalists respect me and heck, even tell me what I should improve. Why not? Haha! And what difficulties you encountered while playing Extreme music for this?Absolutely no difficulties…A question I like to ask a lot on musicians that follow the underground, is the question on downloading. What would your reaction be if someone told you that he downloaded both your albums and thought they were awesome, and what to someone that told you he bought the albums and thought they were shit? I have no problem with the whole downloading as long as I see you supporting us or spreading our music in some way. For instance, when I see kids telling me: “I downloaded your EP” at our shows, I am not insulted or do I get angry, because they learnt about us that way and guess what? They bought a ticket to come see us. So the support is there! Now for the other situation – I never came across it, but it wouldn’t hurt me as much either. Everyone has different tastes. But my response would have been: “why didn’t you go onyoutube, googled us or tried downloading before?”A good music listener, will research even if it means downloading at first!Outside of playing Metal, what kinds of things do you enjoy doing?I enjoy the gym life, cooking, Instagramhaha, and artwork. But even at that, metal is so present in my life, it tends to sneak in the things I just mentioned! Haha!Well, We have finished with the interview... Thanks for your time and good luck in the future. You can say some words for our readers and your fans. Listen to the quality music and stay Metal!Well I cannot stress enough how wonderful this experience is and how much support we are getting from different places in the world. It just comes to prove that hard work and determination are the main ingredients to success and that there is no success without some failures and struggles. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to share this experience with my fellow 5 members and other bands we have performed with. It also shows how music has no boundaries and nowadays it is so accessible, even through downloading! I still envision so much more with Karkaos and I believe that I can say that we all feel this way. And because of our common dreams and goals, we will keep our music alive and going. We are about to embark on a new journey with a new album being released early spring 2014 and new projects surrounding the launch. I am thrilled to be able to share this news with you all! Keep an eye out through our page www.facebook.com/karkaosand thank you again for your continued support! INDONESIAN VERSION | |
